About the vehicle

We conduct this trip in Suburbans in order to provide a more comfortable ride with air conditioning and heating.

Discover the forgotten Rio Grande mine

The Old Ore tour is a full-day activity covering vast and rugged terrain within the national park; we don’t want first-timers biting off more than they can chew, so we recommend this tour to people who already carry some Big Bend experience. We’ll travel north to south for about 28 miles; kicking off the adventure at Dagger Flats where you’ll be surrounded by native dagger plants, cacti, and classic desert landscape your guide will tell you all about. We’ll stop near Rio Grande Village, an old mining area where ore was transported into the States from Mexico about 100 years ago. Remnants of the old cables and overhead cars can still be seen today! We’ll keep you fuelled with a classic Far Flung field lunch complete with sandwich bar, chips, homemade salsa, cookies, fresh fruit, and plenty of iced water and lemonade to keep you hydrated.

What about the bathroom?

Because the trip will take us through primitive areas of Big Bend, bathroom facilities are limited. Our guides will carry a basic toilet system, but your choice of restroom will be bushes or large rocks! You will have access to the Far Flung Outdoor Center restrooms before and after the trip.

Should I tip the guide?

Many guests ask us whether tipping the guides is appropriate. If you believe the guide exceeded your service expectations, please feel free to leave a tip (10-15% of the trip price is normal). Tipping is by no means required.

What's your cancellation policy?

Jeep tours require a 20% non-refundable deposit with the balance due 5 days prior to the date of the trip. Cancellations 5 days prior to departure forfeit the deposit amount. Cancellations (including no-shows) within 5 days of the trip departure forfeit the entire cost of the trip.
It is rare that Far Flung will cancel a tour, but in the event we do, all money (including deposits) will be refunded.

Will I be required to sign a waiver?

Trip participants must understand and appreciate that riding in an off-road vehicle involves some risk. These risks include, but are not limited to:

  1. Forces of nature, including extreme heat, cold, hail, rain, and lightning
  2. Possible roll-over or loss of control of a Jeep driven by others related to excessive speed, rough, steep, or narrow trails and collisions with other vehicles, boulders, vegetation, wild animals, livestock, or other man-made or natural objects
  3. Accident or illness without access to immediate evacuation or availability of medical supplies and the inadequacy of medical attention once provided

All participants will be required to sign a waiver before partaking in any Far Flung activity and must agree to abide by all rules related to off-road safety as outlined by Far Flung Outdoor Center and/or its guide staff.
