The Far Flung Difference

Not all outfitters are created equal. So, every day our goal is to be on top of our game; providing the warmest southern welcome, using the highest quality equipment, and hand-picking our guides for skill, outdoor knowledge, and friendliness.

We want to be your best friends in Big Bend – people you can trust to help make the most of your outdoor adventures in the park. Come experience with us the majesty of this vast, untamed wilderness that we love so dearly. We know you’ll be captured by it, just like we are every single day. On behalf of everyone at Far Flung, we look forward to helping you discover and explore the canyons, rivers, mountains, and endless desert vistas that make up the wild and wonderful Big Bend National Park.

A Passion for Big Bend Inspires a Life-Long Career Change

You won’t find two people more in love with the natural beauty and history surrounding Big Bend National Park than Greg and Valynda Henington. They both left their banking jobs – Greg in Houston and Valynda in Fort Davis – to settle in the last frontier of Terlingua, TX as co-owners and managers of Far Flung Outdoor Center (formerly known as Texas River Expeditions).

Far Flung Outdoor Center is the baby of Mark Evans, who started Texas River Expeditions (TRE) back in 1974, and Greg who joined him in 1986. In 2001, they purchased Far Flung Adventures, merged it with TRE, and founded what would become the widest, most complete offering of outdoor experiences available in West Texas: Far Flung Outdoor Center.

About Greg

It’s been more than 30 years since Greg first began introducing people to the wonders of the Rio Grande River and taking them to see its hidden gems. Today, that passion is stronger than ever before, with FFOC offering a huge variety of activities for its guests to get out and discover the rugged beauty of Big Bend. As a result of living in a remote territory, Greg has studied and developed an expertise in wilderness medicine which, as a paramedic for Terlingua Fire & EMS, often has him answering medical emergencies in the Big Bend. And, as if all that weren’t enough, he hopes to someday author a book or two about America’s last frontier! Until then, you’ll probably find him making sure everything is running like clockwork at Far Flung. As for when Greg’s on vacation, it’s not unusual to find him rowing the Grand Canyon or one of America’s other great western rivers, as his love of rivers runs deep, even during his free time.

About Valynda

Valynda won’t tell you, but she’s the reason people stick around to work for Greg (and probably the reason why he’s still sane!). She smoothes out all the details of answering phones, coordinating trips, and making sure that everyone who goes on an adventure returns home with a smile on their face. If you get treated like you’re part of the family (which you will), it’s all her doing. Valynda is also a skilled gardener and has begun adding a native plant landscaping program to the Far Flung grounds. And, she’s a darned good boat rower in her own right; ask Valynda about her just-right-sized raft and her face will light up from Terlingua to the Chisos!
